L.A. to Host the Olympics in 2028

It’s almost official! The City of Los Angeles will host the Summer Olympics in 2028. The city has reached a deal with the International Olympic Committee after weeks of negotiations that will see a record payment of $1.8 billion to L.A. by the IOC. Monday’s announcement puts Paris on track to host the games in 2024.

“This is an historic day for Los Angeles, for the United States and for the Olympic and Paralympic Movements around the world,” said Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti. “Today, we take a major step toward bringing the Games back to our city for the first time in a generation and begin a new chapter in Los Angeles’ timeless Olympic story.”

This will be the third time that L.A. has hosted the games. The first time was in 1932 and the second in 1984. It’s going to be an extravaganza, not just for Los Angeles, but for a number of surrounding cities which will also participate in the event.

The city’s plans for the 2028 Olympics are expected to follow the same trajectory as plans initially put out for 2024. These featured proposed competitions in Santa Monica, Pasadena, Inglewood, Carson, Long Beach and Anaheim.

The plan must now be approved by the Los Angeles City Council and the United States Olympic Committee board of directors.

See a full map of the proposed venues list here. For more on the agreement between the IOC and Los Angeles and reactions to the news, visit the Los Angeles Times.
