Mayor Eric Garcetti and Los Angeles labor leaders have reached an agreement to delay 15,000 worker furloughs which would have represented a pay cut of 10%. The mayor has agreed to follow an alternative plan of action pending the possibility of more federal aid.
Under the new proposal, a larger group of civilian workers would take a day off without pay on Nov. 3, which is election day, followed by a second unpaid day in April. Civilian employee unions also agreed to delay of a planned payment of unused sick time, which is normally given to workers in January.
In exchange, thousands of workers would receive a new floating holiday for the fiscal year that ends on June 30, according to the proposal.
Garcetti spokesman Alex Comisar said, by January, the administration hopes to know more about how the pandemic is impacting city revenues and what, if any, congressional relief is on the way. In the meantime, assuming it gets City Council approval, Garcetti said the agreement "enables us to keep city services and programs intact.”
It’s not clear how Tuesday’s Twitter stimulus debacle will affect the agreement.
