Los Angeles has lost its first active duty police officer to COVID-19. Valentin “Val” Martinez, an officer in the Mission division area of the San Fernando Valley, passed away Friday. He was 45 years old.
“Officer Martinez passed away after a long, courageous battle with COVID-19,” Chief Michel Moore said in an email to employees obtained by KTLA. “Our hearts and prayers go out to his loved ones, friends, and his Mission Area family as they grieve the loss of a fallen hero.”
Martinez is believed to have contracted the virus while on duty. He first tested positive in May. His partner, Megan Flynn, is 20 weeks pregnant with twins.
Martinez’s passing came less than a month after the death of 39-year-old LAPD detention officer Erica McAdoo.
