City officials in Lathrop are still debating the best course of action for filling the vacancy left by deceased Council Member Ruben Sandoval. The newly-elected councilman passed away suddenly on Dec. 22, a mere two days after he took the oath of office.
“It’s a sad day for our city,” Mayor Sonny Dhaliwal said of Sandoval’s passing. “I’ve known Ruben for about 10 years, and he loved Lathrop – it’s absolutely tragic that he won’t get to serve the city that he loved and cared so much about.”
“We will miss him,” the mayor added.
Sandoval ousted appointed incumbent Mark Elliot in the November election. There was tremendous excitement surrounding his win, given his vast knowledge and impeccable credentials. Sandoval held a bachelor’s degree in computer science, a master’s in both business and human resources, and a doctorate in organizational studies. He had previously served on the board for the Lathrop Chamber of Commerce and was an organizer for the city’s Diversity Celebration event, but this was to be his first time actually serving in public office.
“He was very excited to serve a community that he loved very much,” Dhaliwal recalled.
Sandoval’s death is a first for the city. Never in its 27-year history has a sitting council member passed away.
