Second chances aren’t all that common these days, but a Livermore planning commissioner is getting one.
The City Council voted Monday to allow John Stein to keep his job after he expressed fears that a low-income housing project in the downtown could turn the area into a “ghetto.” The comment was described as offensive and racist.
The city is instead turning this into a teachable moment for Stein, who offered his resignation after the remark. To keep his job, he will take a tour of affordable housing units, meet with city’s equity and inclusion group, and attend a virtual training session.
