Pleasanton City Manager Nelson Fialho announced his retirement Tuesday after 17 years on the job and an incredible three decades in public service. Fialho will depart after Thanksgiving.

“The highlight has been working alongside the smart and talented people who support the mission of this extraordinary city," he said. "I am immeasurably grateful to all those who supported me, including our employees and city councils past and present."

Fialho’s achievements include the development of the city’s pension obligation strategy; the establishment of the Livermore-Pleasanton Fire Department and Pleasanton Library; the updated Downtown Specific Plan; management of the city's 20-year General Plan Update; affordable senior housing at Kottinger Place; construction of the Veterans Memorial at Pioneer Cemetery; completion of the Alviso Adobe and Bernal community parks, Patelco Sports Complex, Callippe Preserve Golf Course, Firehouse Arts Center, and the Castleridge staging area and trail; and a regional testing and vaccine center set up through Stanford Health Care-ValleyCare in partnership with the cities of Dublin and Livermore.

“Nelson’s strong leadership alongside the city council was instrumental in managing many monumental challenges such as an historic 4-year drought, the Great Recession, and now COVID-19, plus variants," Mayor Karla Brown told the Pleasanton Weekly. "I hope Nelson takes some well-deserved time off before he embarks on his next chapter of life."
