Crazy cat ladies, rejoice! The number of allotted cats for Los Angeles city residents is poised to increase from three five, following a vote by the city council this week.
We all know three cats just isn’t enough for a die-hard cat lover, and apparently the city council does too. So in a unanimous decision Tuesday, it directed the city attorney to draft a law that would allow two extra felines to be legally kept indoors.
Such a change would greatly reduce the number of animals on the streets or in shelters according to Council Member Paul Koretz, who chairs the Personnel and Animal Welfare Committee. By the same token, supporters of the ordinance say it will reduce the number of kitties who are euthanized each year.
There are some very real worries that the new law could turn the city into a bastion of chaotic cat hoarding. But officials note that cities with no caps on cat ownership, such as San Diego and Santa Monica, appear to be doing just fine.
