The Los Angeles City Council declared a fiscal emergency Tuesday amid a $1 billion budget deficit for FY 2025-26. The declaration is a necessary precursor to address the shortfall.
The city plans to lay off as many as 614 employees. On the chopping block: 248 LAPD civilian employees, 57 members of the Personnel Department, 44 sanitation workers, 41 Fire Department employees, 34 IT staffers, 33 general services workers, and 29 transportation employees.
Some workers could be moved to the Port of Los Angeles, Los Angeles World Airports, or the Department of Water and Power.
The budget crisis was caused by a variety of factors, including overspending, declining tourism revenue, costly labor contracts, the January wildfires, and a surge of liability payouts.
