Malibu City Manager Jim Thorsen has announced his retirement effective May 2, concluding a 10 year run with the beachside city. His departure will come ten years to the day he started as Malibu’s top administrator and just a month and half after the city’s 25th anniversary of incorporation.
“As we take stock of all the accomplishments of the city, we will find Jim’s fingerprints on so many,” Mayor Laura Rosenthal said.
During his tenure, Thorsen spearheaded the reconstruction of the Malibu Library and the purchase of City Hall in addition to numerous public works and clean water projects. Under his leadership, the city’s annual budget grew from $8 million to $20 million, while maintaining a AAA credit rating.
Thorsen is a licensed civil engineer with an impressive career spanning more than three decades. Before assuming the position in Malibu, he served as city manager and public works director for Agoura Hills.
Thorsen said his proudest accomplishment is the excellent caliber of Malibu’s staff.
“In the end, City Hall is a service organization, and our ability to accomplish the Council’s goals is dependent on the teamwork of City staff. I have been lucky to have great staff to work with,” he added.
