Mayor who said ice fishing could lead to prostitution resigns

Cancel culture has really gotten out of control. Now you can’t even make the link between ice shanties and sex work without someone getting their knickers in a twist.

The mayor of a small city in Ohio resigned Monday after he suggested that permitting ice fishing could lead to prostitution.

Hudson Mayor Craig Shubert, who has twice made national headlines with unusual remarks since his wife died in early September, said his comments amounted to dry humor weaponized by political opponents.

Shubert questioned the idea of allowing ice fishing, which he noted could come with accompanying shelter, at Tuesday's City Council meeting: "If you then allow ice fishing with shanties, then that leads to another problem — prostitution." — NBC News

As NBC News reports, this isn’t the first time Shubert made headline-worthy comments. He previously accused school teachers of distributing child pornography — a claim Summit County Prosecutor Sherri Bevan Walsh found false. His comments led to the harassment of school board officials, Walsh said.

The latest comments about ice fishing shanties had become an enormous distraction for the town, generating humorous headlines across the country. Citing his wife’s unfortunate death from cancer in September, Shubert decided it was time to call it quits.

"Since the passing of my wife, First Lady Sherri Moyer, I have given considerable thought to the next stage of my life," Shubert said. "Retirement is on the near horizon. ... I wish to thank the residents of Hudson who have stood alongside Sherri and me the past three years."
