Maywood Mayor Ramon Medina was found guilty of animal cruelty Tuesday for failing to care for his chronically ill pit bull mix, Hershey.
Medina’s dog was found emaciated and unable to walk at his auto shop in 2015 before he became mayor. Prosecutors said the dog, who had to be euthanized, had not been properly cared for and had not seen a veterinarian for an extended period of time.
Medina will face sentencing in the case on Sept. 7. The one count of animal cruelty and one count of failure to care for an animal could land him in jail for up to a year.
As City News reported, search warrants were served at Medina’s home and business in February as part of a corruption probe. Authorities also seized 40 roosters from Medina’s auto shop during the raid.
