Monterey County has been formally recognized for its success in helping residents live longer, happier lives.
On August 5, Monterey became the first county in California to receive the certified Blue Zones Community® designation from Blue Zones, LLC. The for-profit company works with governments and nonprofit organizations to promote population wellness. Its Blue Zones Community® designation is given to communities that meet a series of benchmarks associated with increased health, satisfaction, and longevity.
The following improvements helped put Monterey County over the top:
- A rise in residents reporting that they “thrive” daily — from 58.6% to 66%
- More people getting active — 68.1% now exercise at least 30 minutes three or more days per week, up from 62% in 2019
- A 42% drop in reports of high cholesterol
- $133.3 million in grant funding secured by the county
- Over $392 million saved in avoided medical expenses and lost productivity since 2019
The designation also extends to King City, Gonzales, Monterey, Marina, and Seaside. Salinas was recognized as a Blue Zone in 2024. Previous designees include Upper Napa Valley and Loma Linda.
