Murrieta City Manager Kim Summers will retire on Jan. 10, concluding a 25-year career in public administration. Summers thanked the city she has served for the past decade, calling it “the adventure of a lifetime.”
Before joining Murrieta, Summers held various posts with the City of Hesperia. She became Murrieta’s assistant city manager in 2014 and was promoted to city manager three years later.
Summers’ accomplishments in Murrieta, according to the city, “include successfully passing a one-cent sales tax measure (Measure T), ushering the Triangle project to submittal and grading, assisting in the development of the Murrieta Hot Springs Resort, recruiting a Costco, car dealerships, a Trader Joes and countless economic development initiatives.” Under her leadership, the city successfully restructured its finances, met the City Council’s goal of a 30% operating reserve for all departments, maintained the Murrieta Police Department's Safest City status, and achieved national accreditation for the Murrieta Fire & Rescue.
Summers was named Woman of the Year for the 67th Assembly District in 2021. She is also a recipient of the California State Women’s Caucus Award for Woman of the Year, Cal-ICMA's California State Ethical Hero Award, the Top Administrator Award from the American Society for Public Administration (ASPA), and the 2023 MMASC Presidents Award. In October, she will be recognized by ICMA for 25 years of service in local government.
