Across the country, state legislatures have enacted stricter gun control laws to stem the tide of gun violence. Now, an increasing number are being met with resistance by local law enforcement officials who say they’re being asked to enforce rules that violate the U.S. Constitution.
The so-called “Second Amendment sanctuary” movement claims to draw its inspiration from America’s sanctuary cities.
At the time, Second Amendment sanctuaries had popped up in New Mexico, Nevada, Washington, Oregon, and Illinois. Now, California has one of its own.
Needles, California has declared itself a Second Amendment Sanctuary City, according to the Riverside Press-Enterprise. The City Council passed a resolution this month. Its purpose is two-fold: to express its support for gun rights and to allow gun owners from other states to travel through with their firearms unencumbered.
Needles, which is near the border with Arizona, says it has been losing business because gun-carrying Arizona residents are hesitant to enter the city as a result of state gun laws.
