Governor Gavin Newsom will meet with a group of Silicon Valley billionaires who plan to build a futuristic “mega city” near Travis Air Force Base in Solano County.
The project, known as California Forever, has drawn suspicion and condemnation from residents, as well as local and federal officials. There’s good reason for that. As Newsom explained, the investors only hurt themselves by concealing their identities to make land purchases totaling more than 50,000 acres. Worse, they took some local landowners to court, using what one congressman called “mobster tactics” to strong-arm them into selling their properties.
Nevertheless, Newsom said he finds their vision “interesting.” They want to build a sustainable community of around 75,000 people, equipped with plenty of housing, public transportation, businesses, and green space.
The project may require support from the state, so the upcoming meeting could be a make-or-break moment for the group.
