Yummy gummy bears, gooey brownies. These are just some of the ways marijuana could be marketed to your kids on TV if Proposition 64 passes, according to a jarring new campaign ad released by the No on 64 campaign. If the measure were to pass in November, California would see a rise in emergency room visits due to accidental ingestion by children and an increase in fatal car accidents, the ad also warns.
Opponents of the November measure have made a number of arguments, but the idea that children could be the target of marijuana ads is one of the most provocative. Proponents of the measure have denied that, countering that federal regulations would guard against such marketing.
The two sides recently sparred over the issue in court. A judge issued amended ballot language, ruling that televised ads targeted at children was a possibility, though not a certainty, under Proposition 64.
