Cities in the Bay Area are preparing for a massive sweep by U.S. Immigrations and Customs officials following a new report from the San Francisco Chronicle.
According to the Chronicle, ICE is planning immigration raids across the state with the goal of arresting 1,500 people sought for deportation.
As County News reported last week, ICE Director Thomas Homan recently told California to “hold on tight.”
Volunteers are mobilizing across the Bay to assist families targeted in the raids. Meanwhile, law enforcement agencies have already warned ICE that they will have to carry out any enforcement measures without their cooperation.
Officials from several Bay Area law enforcement agencies said Wednesday that federal officials haven’t looped them in on any plans for major sweeps for undocumented immigrants, and added that they didn’t plan to help with any such operations.
The Oakland City Council took it a step further, passing a resolution prohibiting police from providing so much as traffic control for federal immigration-enforcement actions.
Immigration advocates and critics of the president believe the raids -- expected to be the largest to date -- are retaliation for the state’s new sanctuary state law.
