Fillmore’s fire chief, assistant city manager and acting public works director, Rigo Landeros, has died at the age of 51, according to an announcement from city officials Friday. The sudden passing of one of Fillmore’s most beloved officials has sent shockwaves through the close-knit Ventura County community.
“Rigo was a friend to us all and his death is a shock to many in our community,” said Mayor Diane McCall. “Rigo’s city family is truly in mourning today.”
City Manager David Rowlands remembered Landeros as an exceptional husband, father, colleague and friend.
“He will be greatly missed by myself and all who knew him.”
Landeros was born and raised in Fillmore and became involved with the county’s fire department during his teen years. He joined the Fillmore Fire Department in 1991 and, by 2009, had risen to the rank of fire chief. After a stint as interim city manager in 2012-2013, Landeros assumed the position of assistant city manager. A man of many hats, Landeros also accepted the acting public works director position in 2010.
Assistant Fire Chief Bill Herrera is expected to assume fire chief duties for the time being. Landeros is survived by his wife, Laura; one daughter; two sons; a son-in-law; and two grandchildren.
