Online Threats Lead to Arrest of Former Laguna Beach Council Candidate and His Son

A former Laguna Beach City Council candidate and his 33-year-old son have been arrested in connection with violent threats against city council members that were posted on the website Craigslist.

“I am warning the city council that I am going to show up with my gillie suit, to remove these tyrants from office, in 2017,” the post read. "... tell them I am coming to end this corruption, from the Laguna Beach City Council, once and for all. Hahahahahaha, you are going down now.”

The post featured photos of a man in camouflage clothing, hiding behind a bush with a rifle. Authorities have since identified the man in the photos as Michael Ross, the son of Robert Ross, who ran unsuccessfully for the council in 2012.

It's not clear how they identified the younger Ross, or why he posted such a bizarre threat on a site primarily used for selling dingy furniture. A search of his home turned up several rifles, a semi-automatic handgun, and over 100 boxes of ammunition. His father was arrested during execution of the search warrant on suspicion of being a convicted felon in possession of firearms.

Restraining orders have been issued against both men, meaning they cannot go near the city council nor contact its members.
