After a difficult six months, the City of Palm Desert has finally tapped a new city manager. Palm Springs Community and Economic Development Director Lauri Aylaian’s selection was announced by the city council Thursday and will become official on Sept. 8., pending the approval of her contract.
“Lauri Aylaian is the best person for the job; she has great knowledge of our city and will be able to hit the ground running,” said Palm Desert Mayor Robert A. Spiegel.
Aylaian’s appointment will be a welcoming home. She has worked for Palm Desert before, first serving as a project administrator in 1999. In 2002, she was hired as redevelopment manager. Five years later, she was promoted to lead the Community Development Department, where she played an integral role in the development of the city’s general plan, as well as the Envision Palm Desert strategic plan. She has been in Palm Springs since late last year.
Aylaian was chosen among an initial pool of 50 candidates. She takes over from John Wohlmuth, who resigned in April under controversial circumstances.
