The City of Encinitas and San Dieguito Water District are warning some 615 former and current employees that their personal information, including names and social security numbers, were inadvertently exposed on the city’s website for approximately 6 weeks.

The mishap occurred on or around May 13, 2014 when a California Public Employees' Retirement System (CalPERS) payment document was accidentally posted to the site. It was removed on July 3. Between its posting and removal, the document was accessed by 16 persons, according to the city.

Those who may be affected by the breach include City of Encinitas employees who were enrolled in CalPERS between July 1993 and October 2011; City of Encinitas Fire Safety/Fire Protection District Employees who were enrolled between July 1986 and October 2011; and San Dieguito Water District employees who were enrolled between July 1989 and October 2011.

Notices are already being sent out to the 615 employees. As consolation, the city is offering a free one-year membership with an identity theft alert and protection service.

“We have taken necessary steps to improve our processes and systems to prevent this from happening again,” said City Manager Gus Vina.
