Concord City Attorney Mark Coon has died of an apparent suicide, police and city officials have confirmed. The city’s chief counsel was 55 years old and leaves behind a wife and two children.
Authorities were called to the 1100 block of Locust Street Tuesday morning after an adult male leapt to his death from the garage’s 3rd floor. The man, later identified as Concord City Attorney Mark Coon, was pronounced dead at the scene.
"I have known Mark for many years and respected him both as a city employee and as a friend," said City Manager Valerie Barone. "The city has suffered a great loss that will be felt for many years. Our thoughts are with his family at this sad time."
Tuesday’s city council meeting was cancelled, while grief counselors were made available to all city staff. Employees who knew Coon said they never sensed that anything was amiss.
Coon has worked for the city since 2002, first serving as deputy city attorney. He was promoted to the city attorney position in 2012.
