A police investigation is underway following a fatal shooting at the home of Gilroy City Council Member Rebeca Armendariz on Saturday night.
Officers with the Gilroy Police Department say they responded to Armendariz’s home after receiving reports of an altercation and shooting. When they arrived, they found a large outdoor party going on. There were multiple injuries. One of the victims — 18-year-old Michael Daniel Zuniga-Macias — later died from his wounds.
One suspect, a 19-year-old from Gilroy, has been arrested for homicide. Police believe another suspect remains at large. All of the victims were between the ages of 17 and 19.
Armendariz has been tight-lipped about the shooting, citing the ongoing police investigation.
“I am thankful that my family and I, who live on Las Animas, were not hurt in this tragedy, and I pray for those whose loved ones have been touched by what has occurred,” she said in a statement.
This is not the first high-profile shooting in Gilroy. In 2019, a gunman opened fire at the Gilroy Garlic Festival killing three people and wounding 17 others.
