As Ports Speed Up Operations, Empty Shipping Containers Litter Nearby Neighborhoods

The ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach are now running 24 hours a day, seven days a week to mitigate the unprecedented global supply chain disruptions. That’s good for businesses and consumers, but it’s creating a new headache for some neighborhoods. As CBS LA reports, shipping containers that languished for weeks waiting to be unloaded are now being dumped in areas like Wilmington.

Sonia Cervantes lives along Anaheim Street, where UCTI Trucking Company is located.

The company’s lot only has a capacity for 65 containers so the additional containers now line up along Anaheim Street in front of some people’s homes.

“It’s a bunch of neighbors that are very upset because it’s a non-stop situation,” said Cervantes.

“I would have to go in at 6:30 a.m. to go to work. There was a trailer already blocking my driveway so I couldn’t get out. With no driver in the trailer, so we would honk and honk, and it was just crazy.”

UCTI Trucking owner Frank Arrieran said his yard simply doesn’t have space for all the emptied containers. He’s asking the community to be patient with him as he searches for solutions. He met with LA city officials this week to discuss an alternative site for all the empty containers.

The supply chain disruptions are an international problem resulting in supply shortages and increased prices. Experts point to a number of causes including but not limited to the increased demand for tangible goods during the pandemic.
