A homeless shelter in Oxnard has added 100 new beds thanks in part to $25,000 in donations from local marijuana dispensaries. And get this: it was all put together by a neighboring city’s police chief.
After seeing newspaper reports about homeless people forced to sleep on air mattresses, Port Hueneme Police Chief Andrew Salinas contacted Oxnard’s homeless program coordinator. He had an idea. Why not ask some pot shops to pitch in?
Five of them did.
“Being our homeless problem was the biggest, No. 1 problem that we had in our community, I reached out to all of them and they responded without hesitation,” Chief Salinas told KYET in Santa Barbara.
SkunkMasters dispensary in Port Hueneme contributed the largest amount ($17,000). A Port Hueneme community fund also contributed $10,000.
“It’s awesome. This is a gift nobody dreamed of,” said one of the shelter’s residents. “It’s going to make people a lot more comfortable.”
