“Alternative facts” will no doubt be the Word of the Year for 2017. It even came up repeatedly at Compton’s contentious council meeting last week when a routine pothole debate turned cross between council members.
Mayor Aja Brown threatened to start asking people to leave if order couldn’t be achieved. She’s seeking a bond measure to pay for the city’s worsening pothole problem but the voters just passed Measure P. The sales tax increase was supposed to take care of potholes and other infrastructure problems. Yet the city hasn’t spent a dime of it so far.
"I'm not going to double-tax the people," said Councilwoman Janna Zurita. "The people voted for a one-cent sales tax and not a bond." Mayor Brown says she has it all wrong.
