Sanger Unified School Board Trustee Brandon Vang is on track to win the special election for the Fresno City Council’s 5th District, which took place Tuesday, March 18.
As of Thursday morning, Vang had 50.5% of the vote, which would allow him to avoid a runoff. Another update is expected today.
Elizabeth Jonasson Rosas is in second place. She had 34.56% of the vote as of Thursday morning.
Rosas is the wife of former Councilmember Luis Chavez, who vacated the District 5 seat after his election to the Fresno County Board of Supervisors in November. Rosas is also a school board trustee, representing Fresno Unified’s Area 2.
Policy matters were largely overshadowed during the campaign, as both Vang and Rosas faced controversies.
