Protestors began filling the streets of San Diego’s East County Wednesday in response to the fatal shooting of an unarmed black man.
Officers with the El Cajon Police Department shot and killed 38-year-old Alfred Olango Tuesday afternoon in the parking lot of Broadway Village Shopping Center after his sister placed a 911 call. Olango was “not acting like himself,” the sister told police. Cops said the man was acting erratically, that he appeared to be a threat to officers, and that he refused to follow instructions to show his hands. He then removed an object out of his pocket (now identified as a vaping device) and pointed it, police said. Olango was hit with a taser. When that didn’t work, the officers used gunfire.
El Cajon officers are not yet equipped with body cameras but cell phone footage was captured by a witness. Police say they are in possession of it.
