Rancho Palos Verdes is urging the Governor to declare a state of emergency amid ongoing landslides.
The land beneath the peninsula has been progressively moving since 2018, giving way to over 150 landslides. Rainstorms have exacerbated the problem. Local officials say RPV is now home to the “largest landslide in North America.”
Last week, the iconic Wayfarers Chapel — a National Historic Landmark — was shuttered due to "accelerated land movement.”
Parts of the Palos Verdes Nature Preserve have also been closed to the public. Numerous houses have been red-tagged.
A state of emergency would allow RPV to bypass state permit requirements for repairs so that remediation can be completed faster. The council is also asking President Joe Biden to declare a federal disaster zone.
