Redding’s Interim City Manager Barry Tippin will soon assume the top administrator job on a permanent basis. The City Council announced Tippin’s selection last week. A final vote on his hiring is scheduled for June 6.
The city had hired an outside consultant and narrowed its search down to five candidates. But it soon became clear that the best person for the job was already sitting right in front of them.
“Someone from the outside would have to learn all the different layers of the departments,” said Vice Mayor Kristen Scheder. “Reorganization is important but it should be done with awareness and institutional knowledge.”
Tippin said he was humbled and excited to take the job. He is expected to earn $210,000 as city manager.
Tippin previously worked for the California Department of Transportation in Redding. The city’s last chief executive, Kurt Starman, has retired.
