An ordinance that would have penalized adults for underage drinking that occurs on their property has been quashed by Redondo Beach’s mayor following unexpected pushback from residents.
Bill Brand said the so-called “social host” law was too heavy-handed and could have pushed parties and underage drinking into the streets. Under the ordinance, which passed its second reading 3 to 2, landowners or leaseholders could have faced up to six months in jail, a $1,000 fine, and reimbursement of city expenses for teen drinking that occurs on their property.
The cites of Hermosa Beach, Manhattan Beach, Rancho Palos Verdes, Palos Verdes Estates, Rolling Hills and Rolling Hills Estates have similar policies, but the penalties are far less stiff and do not include possible jail time.
Despite the veto, Mayor Brand wants adults in his city to know it is still against the law to furnish alcohol to a minor.
