Fresno City Council candidate Rene Campos says he’s running to make the city safer from criminals. And he knows a lot about criminals — because he is one.
In 2018, Campos pleaded no contest to possession of child pornography and was forced to register as a sex offender. Campos says he’s a changed man, and he's hoping voters will choose him to represent the 7th District.
Campos describes himself as “out of the box” (no argument there) and someone with the personal experience necessary to ensure “clean, safe neighborhoods.”
Nav Gurm, who is also running for the 7th District, finds Campos’ entire campaign to be absurd. Gurm believes being a registered sex offender should disqualify anyone from serving on the council. He says he's reached out to state legislators about a possible bill.
Fresno’s 7th District is currently held by Nelson Esparza, who is term-limited and running for the California State Senate. Gurm previously served on Esparza’s staff.
