In an long awaited move, the Sacramento City Council has unanimously approved a plan to permit 10 additional marijuana dispensaries. It will bring the total number of allotted shops to 40.
The city’s goal is to increase equity in the local cannabis industry. Today, none of Sacramento’s 30 licensed cannabis dispensaries are owned by women or people of color.
To be eligible for the new permits, applicants must be former or current participants in the city’s Cannabis Opportunity Reinvestment and Equity (CORE) program, which serves individuals who have been negatively impacted by the War on Drugs. City officials had previously considered a lottery but have since abandoned the idea.
