The City of Sacramento’s leadership is looking at little… waspy.
So concludes a recent review from the city’s auditor, which looked at the diversity—or lack thereof—among city employees over the past 15 years. According to the report released Tuesday, more than 50 percent of managers are white in all but two city departments in Sacramento. Eleven of thirteen department directors are also Caucasian.
The trend bucks that of the city itself, which has seen a boom in its minority population.
“These numbers are dismal,” said Mayor Kevin Johnson. “We are not proud of it.”
Ironically, Johnson is the city's first African American mayor.
Sacramento officials are calling on the city to do better. Johnson said he also wants a review of the police department’s diversity programs, which have drawn $1 million for each of the past two budget years. According to the audit, 25 percent of the city’s police officers are people of color. The figure is around 15 percent for sworn Fire Department personnel.
