The Sacramento City Council has postponed its national search for a city manager until incoming mayor Darrell Steinberg takes over in December. Instead, the Council appointed Assistant City Manager Howard Chan to the interim position last week. He will assume that role in November when City Manager John Shirley’s contract expires.
Chan has worked for the City of Sacramento for the past fourteen years, holding the title of assistant city manager for the past three. Before that, he worked as parking services manager, overseeing parking and meters in the city.
Prior to last week’s decision, there had been some concern about a new administrator being hired without input from the soon-to-be mayor.
Steinberg said he was pleased with Chan’s appointment.
“I look forward to working with him and hitting the ground running for this city,” he said in a statement.
