Things have gotten a whole lot worse for embattled Salinas Councilman Jose Castaneda. On Thursday, Salinas police confirmed that the elected official, who is already facing legal troubles, was arrested and brought in on kidnapping, false imprisonment and domestic violence charges.
The incident occurred on Sept. 4 and involved an ex-girlfriend of Castaneda’s, police said. The councilman is accused of waiting outside her home, kidnapping her, and holding her hostage for several hours. During that time, he also struck the woman, leading to the felony domestic violence charge. He then eventually released her and allowed her to walk home.
Castaneda is no stranger to legal woes. Twelve years ago, he was convicted of one charge of battery which earned him three years of probation and 40 hours of community service. In addition, Castaneda was censured by the Salinas City Council last month. During the hearing, Castaneda was described as "aggressive, intimidating, and disrespectful conduct toward city staff” and at least one follow council member said she felt unsafe around him.
