Recreational marijuana dispensaries can’t legally operate in California yet but, once they can, they’ll be permitted in San Diego. Last weke, the city became the first in San Diego County to allow sales of recreational marijuana for 15 dispensaries that garner city approval.
The vote was unanimous and bucked recommendations from city police. Council members also voted to consider rules for commercial grows, labs and distribution. The increased openness to cannabis, they said, was motivated by San Diego voters’ overwhelming approval for Proposition 64 in November.
In addition to the statewide regulatory framework that’s currently being constructed, San Diego pot shops may have to wait for Coastal Commission approval before opening their doors.
