Ever wished you could purchase an ADU? It’s now possible in one Bay Area city.
San Jose just became the first city in California to allow sales of accessory dwelling units or “granny flats.”
The move was made possible by AB1033 (Ting). Passed in January, the law allows property owners to sell an ADU apart from the main home. AB 1033 requires opt-in from cities.
San Jose Mayor Matt Mahan said the policy will make homeownership more accessible, especially for young people and those on fixed incomes.
Berkeley is considering passing an ordinance next.
