By a wide margin, voters in San Jose’s Third District have selected Planning Commission Chair Anthony Tordillos to represent them on the City Council.
Tordillos has declared victory in the special runoff election held June 24. His opponent, Latina Coalition of Silicon Valley Executive Director Gabby Chavez‑Lopez, conceded on Thursday. Unofficial results show Tordillos received 5,328 votes (about 64%), while Chavez‑Lopez trailed with 2,954 votes (around 36%) out of 8,326 ballots cast.
“District 3 voters showed they won’t settle for status quo San Jose politics. They’re tired of the same old fights between ‘business’ and ‘labor’ — they want a councilmember they can count on to deliver results on housing affordability, homelessness and public safety,” Tordillos said in a statement. “We were never supposed to make it this far, but thanks to the hundreds of volunteers who knocked on over 30,000 doors, we’re here.”
Tordillos will fill the seat vacated by former Councilmember Omar Torres, who resigned in November 2024 and later pleaded no contest to multiple charges of child sexual abuse.
Tordillos campaigned on restoring public trust, accelerating housing construction, and enhancing public safety. After advancing to a runoff in April, he was endorsed by Mayor Matt Mahan. He also had the support of the San José Police Officers' Association, as well as some labor and business groups.
