A 60-year-old marble statue of Christopher Columbus will be removed from San Jose City Hall following a vote by the city council Tuesday night. The city has six weeks to find an alternative location or else move it to storage.
"Look, I'm Italian-American. I think my grandfather was a member of the group that donated it," said Mayor Sam Liccardo. "But I think that our understanding of history evolves as we learn more."
The Columbus statue is the latest in a long line of stone casualties across the U.S., as localities attempt to make peace with dark moments in American history. Last year, a number of cities also began replacing Christopher Columbus Day with Indigenous Peoples Day.
