The mayor of San Jose is recovering after being struck by a vehicle while riding his bicycle on New Year’s Day.
Sam Liccardo was biking along the 600 block of Salt Lake Drive when an SUV reportedly cut him off, forcing him to careen into the vehicle. Witnesses say he was thrown through the windshield. He suffered back injuries, as well as a broken collarbone and chest bone. The driver remained at the scene and has been cooperating with police.
Liccardo, an avid bicycling enthusiast, thanked his neighbors and the first responders who rushed to his aid in a Twitter post. He also received well wishes from the San Francisco Bicycle Coalition. The organization said the incident underscores the importance of Vision Zero, a road safety project embraced by numerous cities worldwide, including San Jose.
