San Leandro District 1 City Councilmember Celina Reynes has resigned, effective Dec. 31, less than one year into her term. Reynes says she is stepping down to take care of her newborn daughter.
“I deeply respect Council Member Reynes’ passion and dedication to our community,” Mayor Juan Gonzalez III said in a statement. “I look forward to hearing from her, as she advocates for positive change in the lives of all San Leandro residents.”
The city’s website states Reynes is a former high school English teacher who is pursuing a J.D. at the U.C. School of Law, San Francisco. Her term expires in 2026.
City leaders will soon discuss how to fill the vacancy. Mayor Gonzalez has encouraged civic-minded residents of District 1 to consider running for the seat.
