The San Rafael City Council voted unanimously Monday to promote Assistant City Manager Jim Schutz to the city manager position. Schutz’s appointment is effective Aug. 1 at an annual salary of $208,668 in addition to allowances and benefits—the same as his predecessor, Nancy Mackle.
Mackle announced her retirement in January. She will step down on July 31, concluding a 25-year career in public administration.
“There’s nothing better than to leave the place you love in the hands of someone you trust,” Mackle said of Schutz’s appointment.
Schutz thanked the city council for its confidence and said he was excited to begin his new job.
The 46-year-old assistant city manager holds a bachelor’s degree in environmental studies and city planning from the University of California, Santa Barbara and a master’s degree in city and regional planning from Cal Poly in San Luis Obispo. He also has a sustainable practices certificate from the School of Business and Leadership at Dominican University.
