Santa Monica City Attorney Doug Sloan has decided to return to Central California, three years after relocating to the L.A. County beach town. Sloan announced his resignation last Thursday, effective August 31.
Sloan was appointed Santa Monica City Attorney in 2022. He’d spent the previous 16 years in Fresno, serving as assistant city attorney and then city attorney.
“I have the deepest appreciation and respect for the current councilmembers and those who hired me three years ago. It has been a joy to work and live — on the beach! — in Santa Monica, and I’m proud of the city’s accomplishments during this time,” Sloan said. “I regret that I need to move on to fulfill my personal journey, and I wish everyone in Santa Monica the best.”
Sloan announced he has accepted a position with another agency in Central California.
The Santa Monica City Council met Tuesday in closed session to discuss the appointment of an interim city attorney along with next steps for recruiting a permanent replacement.
This marks the second major leadership change at City Hall this summer. Santa Monica welcomed Oliver Chi as its new city manager on July 14.
