Santa Monica City Manager David White is returning to his old digs. On Tuesday, White announced that he’ll be stepping down in February to serve as Deputy City Manager of Berkeley once again.
White was hired by Santa Monica just three years ago. He was Berkeley’s deputy manager at the time. He had previously spent five years as Fairfield’s city manager.
In a press release, Santa Monica cited the following accomplishments:
- Advanced bold initiatives to strengthen the approach to public safety and broadened the work to address homelessness
- Moved forward infrastructure projects that ensure Santa Monica remains a leader in sustainability and provides for a best-in-class multimodal transportation network
- Adopted new tax measures to sustain and expand services
- Adopted zoning code amendments to support the city's economic recovery, bringing new stores to the Third Street Promenade, a revitalized hospitality sector and residential development throughout the city
- Began the years-long process for the conversion of the Santa Monica Airport site
White called his coming departure “bittersweet.”
The search for the city’s next chief executive is expected to begin in the coming weeks. The last city manager search was fraught, with Rene Bobadilla declining a job offer from the city after his selection was leaked to the press.
