The Seaside City Council terminated its contract with City Manager Jaime Fontes last week, less than two years after he was appointed. Fontes was removed “without cause.”
Fontes was hired in 2022 after the departure of Craig Malin. On April 18, the city council placed Fontes on paid leave for undisclosed reasons.
In May, the city manager requested a public meeting regarding the council’s intention to remove him from his position. Fontes was a no-show.
Police Chief Nick Borges has been serving as acting city manager for the past two months. He’ll continue in that role while the city looks for a permanent replacement.
Under the terms of his contract, Fontes is entitled to $125,000 in severance, which is equivalent to six months’ pay.
