Several More Cities Join Sanctuary Fight

The internal strife over California’s sanctuary laws is not over. Not by a long shot.

Los Alamitos held its second and final vote to declare itself exempt from California’s sanctuary law, SB 54, on Monday evening. The resolution passed 4-1.

Last Tuesday, Newport Beach voted unanimously to oppose SB 54 and says it may follow up with an amicus brief in support of the federal government’s lawsuit against California. Westminster is already doing so.

On Wednesday, the city council voted 3-1 to sign a court brief supporting the suit against California over SB 54. Other cities that have joined the revolt in the past two weeks include Escondido, Aliso Viejo, Huntington Beach, Yorba Linda, Mission Viejo, and San Juan Capistrano, as well as the High Desert cities of Hesperia and Barstow.

Santa Ana is the lone voice of support for the sanctuary measure in conservative Orange County. Earlier this month, the city council voted to file a court brief in support of the state’s position on SB 54.
