San Francisco could impose a new business curfew in the Tenderloin as part of ongoing efforts to crack down on crime.
Mayor London Breed introduced the proposal this week. County supervisors would have to give their approval sometime next month or in June.
Under the plan, stores that sell pre-packaged food or tobacco products would have to remain closed between midnight and 5 a.m. Violators would face fines of $1,000 for every hour they’re open past curfew.
The policy is aimed at open-air drug dealers who gather outside corner stores or smoke shops late at night.
"This is an idea for the community, from the community. The drug markets happening at night in this neighborhood are unacceptable and must be met with increased law enforcement and new strategies,” the mayor said.
District 5 Supervisor Dean Preston has requested a list of businesses that would be impacted.
