Shock: L.A. City Councilman Will Step Down Before Term’s End

In a surprise announcement Thursday, the only Republican on Los Angeles’ 15-member City Council said he would be stepping down from the dais at the end of the year.

Mitchell Englander has served the City of Los Angeles for the past seven years, representing the northwest San Fernando Valley. He was elected to a second four-year term in 2015.

Englander initially had no plans to leave, but a “once-in-a-lifetime opportunity” presented itself, he said. Reacting to the news, Council President Herb Wesson praised Englander’s long history of reaching across the aisle.

Englander is the second council member to prematurely vacate his seat for a job in the private sector. In 2016, Felipe Fuentes, who also represented parts of the Valley, left to become a Sacramento lobbyist.
