New speed cameras are coming to school zones in six California cities, thanks to a law that took effect Jan. 1.
AB 645 was authored by Assemblywoman Laura Friedman (D-Burbank) and signed into law by Gov. Gavin Newsom in October. It establishes a five-year pilot program involving the following cities:
Los Angeles
San Jose
Oakland
Glendale
Long Beach
San Francisco
For the first time, these cities are permitted to install cameras near schools, as well as areas prone to street racing or vehicle fatalities.
The cameras’ installation comes amid a 41-year high for pedestrian fatalities. Around 1,100 people were killed last year by a vehicle while walking in California.
